What is "Swayze's Eyes?"

Look at the passion! Swayze's Eyes will bring it out in you, too!

Introduction

Swayze's Eyes is an exhilarating dice game that gained popularity around Chicago's north side over 10 years ago. So the little hand says it's time to rock and roll.  Grab two dice and a score sheet!

Object of the Game

Roll dice, accumulating points, to achieve the highest total score.

Scoring and Rules

Scoring is done by adding the value of the two dice.  If a player rolls double, the score for that roll is doubled. Both dice must be used on each roll, and each player must roll at least once per turn. A player’s turn ends in one of three ways:

  1. The player may elect to stop after any roll and book their score. That score becomes the player’s starting point at the next turn.
  2. The player rolls one die showing the number 1. At that point the player loses all points from that turn and returns to the prior score.
  3. The player rolls two dice showing the number 1 – the dreaded “Swayze’s Eyes.” Patrick’s eyes may have danced on the silver screen, but they’ll rip your throat out in this game. The player loses all points, returns to zero, and more importantly, must sing a few bars of Patrick Swayze’s 1987 power ballad, “She’s Like the Wind.”  Failure to perform an acceptable snippet results in immediate disqualification.

Winning

A winning score must be 100 points or higher. After any player has booked a score at 100 points or higher, the remaining players get one final turn. The winner is the player with the highest at the end of that round.

Strategy

  • A winning score is generally one that is well above 100.
  • Smart players often choose to book a score in the high 90s in the hope that they have a long run from there.
  • Some players have been known to slow an opponent’s momentum by asking for a score re-cap, known by seasoned players as a “Point Break.” The tactic’s success is questionable.

Variations and House Rules

Swayze’s Eyes is a game that lends itself to a little creativity. Some common House Rules include:

  • A player receives a 40-point bonus if Swayze’s Eyes are rolled on their first turn of the game (or on any first turn where the starting score is zero).
  • Any die that rolls off the defined playing surface is known as a “Ghost” and is scored as a 1.
